MEEKS, Francis L.

FRANCIS LEE MEEKS

“Frank”

Frank died on August 15, 2015. He was 97. A native of Schuyler, Virginia, Frank worked at the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company before serving as a navigator in the Army Air Corps during WWII. After the war, he worked at the National Security Agency from its beginning until his retirement in 1975. He retired a second time, in 1998, from Apple Federal Credit Union. Frank was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Eda Hylton Meeks, and their daughter, Rebecca. He is survived by his daughters, Teresa (Fred Teal Jr.) and Janet; grandson, Thomas Meeks-Teal; and one of his eight siblings, Nancy Meeks Hubbard. Plans for a memorial service in Covington, Virginia, will be announced. In lieu of flowers, please perform an act of kindness for someone today.

On Wednesday, August 19, 2015, surrounded by her family and friends, Jeannie joined her husband of 40 years, Bill, in heaven. Born in Washington, DC to Robert and Kathryn Achstetter, she married and moved to Beltsville, MD to raise her family. She returned to the workforce to become a cryptanalyst for the NSA, retiring in 2010. She was the beloved mother of Kirsten (Robert) Zuzin, Bridgid (Christopher) Houbeck, Shannon (Adam) Holt, and Maura (Stephen) Anthony; grandmother of Meg, Rhett, and Nadia; sister of Robert, Christine (Art) Burket and Stephen (Carol). BARNES, Paula Sue Burns

Paula Sue Burns Barnes

Paula Barnes, long time Washingtonian, died on August 20 at the Rockville Nursing Home. She was 84. The cause was complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

Paula Sue Burns was born in Newark, New Jersey on December 10, 1930 to Louis J. Burns, Sr., and the former Margaret Benton Finnegan.  She spent her early years in Nutley, New Jersey. In 1940 her family moved to Washington, DC when her father who worked for AT&T was transferred.

Paula attended Nativity Grammar School on Georgia Avenue, and then attended Notre Dame Academy on North Capital Street.  In 1947 she graduated first in her class and as a senior was awarded the Soroptimist Award for being one of the outstanding high school students graduating in the District of Colombia

In 1947 she matriculated at Trinity College, Washington, DC. While a student at Trinity, Paula was active in the National Federation of Catholic College Students.  She held several major posts with that organization including National Travel Chairman and Regional President.  In this position she had the opportunity to meet President Harry Truman at the White House.  She was also a member of Who’s Who for College Students.  Throughout college Paula also worked as a fashion model for the Garfinkel’s Department Store.  She was graduated from Trinity College 1951 with a degree in Economics.

Immediately after college Paula worked in publishing including several years as Managing Editor of Signal Magazine, the official publication of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association.

In November 1955 Paula married Paul D. Barnes, MD, a graduate of Georgetown University and Medical School who upon completion of his training would spend his entire career affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry at Georgetown.   Her first child, David, was born in 1956, and she resigned from publishing and became a full-time mother.  Mrs. Barnes had three more children: JoAnna (1960), Susan (1963), and Stephen (1966).  During these years she was active in her community and church.

Since 1965 she has been a member of St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Rockville, Maryland, and was active in church and social affairs.  She taught CCD, and served on numerous school committees.  She was President of the St. Elizabeth’s Home & School Association, and she was also Co-President of the Georgetown Preparatory School Home & School Association.

In 1977 Mrs. Barnes’ life took a new turn when she began to work at the Academy of the Holy Cross, Kensington, Maryland, as a Resource Mother. She remained at Holy Cross until 1996, and held several positions, including Senior Project Coordinator and Freshman Guidance Counselor.  During this time she took graduate classes at Trinity College.  She had a special interest in students with learning differences, and she developed and implemented one of the first programs for students with learning differences at a college preparatory high school in the Washington Archdiocese.

Mrs. Barnes, who lived in Rockville, Maryland, is survived by her loving husband of sixty years, Dr. Paul D. Barnes, and her brother, Richard S. Burns, now of Tuscon, AZ. She is also survived by her four children: David C Barnes, M.D. (Ann Lapham Barnes), JoAnna J. Barnes (David M. Margolis, M.D.), Susan M. Barnes (Pat Antonietti), and Stephen P. Barnes (Suzy Roth Barnes).  She is survived by nine grandchildren: Connor Barnes (Laura Fox Barnes), Ashley Barnes, Sara Margolis, Daniel Margolis, Kammie Murphy, Caroline Murphy, Andrew Murphy, Matthew Barnes, and Evelyn Barnes.  And, one great-grandchild, Lily Kathleen Barnes.  She is pre-deceased by her brother, Louis J. Burns, Jr.  Her kind heart and gentle spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

Relatives and friends may call at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, 917 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD 20852 on Tuesday, August 25, from 9 to 10 a.m.; where Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Interment private at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff and administrators of the Rockville Nursing Home for the care they provided to Mrs. Barnes during these past four years.

Died August 20, 2015 at the age of 86. Mrs. Bruno was born and raised in Ragalna, Italy, a small town on the island of Sicily. At the age of 17, her parents arranged for her to marry Giuseppe Bruno from a nearby town. In 1956, at the age of 27, Barbara and Giuseppe and their two children came to America and settled in Washington, DC with their sponsor, sister and brother-in-law, Josephine and Samuel Tropea and their family.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Chevy Chase and had been active throughout her life in a number of Catholic organizations. She had been a member of the Italian civic club, Circolo Nicolosi.

She was the beloved wife of the late Giuseppe Bruno; the mother of Salvatore Joseph(Cynthia) Bruno, Alfio (Leah) Bruno, Mario(Mary) Bruno and Maria Bruno. Proud Nonna of Christopher, Francesca, Cinzia, Eugene, Julia and Sofia. Sister of Graziella and Giuseppina of Sicily, Italy.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at the Collins Funeral Home located at 500 University Blvd. West, Silver Spring, MD (Valet Parking) on Sunday, August 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. for those who would like to share a memory. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament Church at 3630 Quesada St. NW, Washington, DC 20015, at 11 a.m. on Monday August 24. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

A beloved teacher at St. Michael School, Silver Spring, she fought for social justice at the NOW Education Fund and served as Executive Director of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Project. Passed away last Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the Suburban Hospital. Born June 23, 1926 in Bethesda, Maryland. He was the son of late John H Oldfield Sr. and Helen E Phillips Oldfield. Surviving in addition to wife, Sueko Oldfield are his son and daughter-in-law, Misao and Veronica Oldfield. He also has four granddaughters. Alexandra, Norma, Tiara and Kiara.Having served in the Marine Corps for 22 years (Japan, North Korea, and Vietnam), John will be buried at the Arlington National cemetery on October 1, 2015. Margaretann “Maggie” Roberts, age 70, of Rockville, MD, died peacefully on Sunday, August 16, 2015 at Montgomery General Hospital surrounded by her family. The beloved wife of Werner Roberts; proud mother of Emily Roberts and Katherine Howarth; Grandmother to three beautiful grandchildren Fiona, Violet, and Connor Howarth; Sister to Susan Gruenberg. Maggie was a well-loved teacher and substitute teacher in Rockville and Derwood area, including Sequoyah Elementary School, who had retired in 2013. A memorial gathering and celebration of life will be held at Collins Funeral Home (Valet Parking), Sunday, September 6, 2015 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
